WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The Story Behind Small Town Photo
Small Town Photo was inspired by heritage and exploration. Small Town is a translation of the Danish village name Lille Thorup — where Tim’s grandfather, Niels Lillethorup, began a family journey to America in 1905.
Tim has spent 40+ years as a commercial photographer and videographer, traveling the United States and capturing compelling moments from fascinating destinations and serene landscapes.
In recent years, Tim and his wife have embraced slow travel by bicycle — riding highways, rail-to-trail paths, and mountain bike trails with cameras in tow. These exploratory journeys allow them to slow down, notice the details, and photograph the authentic character of small towns and the natural world around them.
Thank you for visiting Small Town Photo and viewing fine art photographic prints available for purchase.

Tim Lillethorup
Photography has been a lifelong passion for me, rooted in a family tradition that began with my grandparents in the 1920s and continued with my father, one of Omaha’s first broadcast photojournalists in the 1950s.
I began developing my craft in a home darkroom and later studied photography at Omaha Tech High School before starting my career as a BMX magazine photographer in 1981. In 1990, I launched my own company, representing 45 years in professional photography and video production.
My BMX photography spans six decades and has appeared in books, magazines, newspapers, and online publications. Today, my work is inspired by travel — often by bicycle — as my wife and I explore and document the beauty of small-town America and the landscapes around us.
